I am interested in solarpunk less as an aesthetic than as a question about how systems are built and cared for.

The aesthetic can be beautiful, but greenery placed around opaque technology is not enough. The part I want to explore is more practical: can a system be understood, repaired, handed off, and eventually retired without trapping the people who depend on it?

That question fits naturally beside homelab and operations work. A small server, a network map, a restore procedure, and a maintenance log are not automatically sustainable. They can still waste power, depend on undocumented knowledge, or become one more fragile thing in a house. But they are useful places to examine the tradeoffs at a scale I can see.

What I want to pay attention to

A few ideas keep surfacing:

  • Repair before replacement. Not as a rule for every situation, but as a serious option with labor, parts, power, and reliability included in the decision.
  • Legibility. A diagram, plain-language runbook, and tested recovery path can matter as much as a clever deployment.
  • Right-sized infrastructure. The smallest system that responsibly does the job may be better than the most impressive one.
  • Local knowledge without local captivity. Running something nearby can give people more control, but only if backups, exports, and handoffs keep that control from depending on one person.
  • Measured claims. Power use, reliability, privacy, and resilience should be measured or carefully bounded rather than implied by the visual language.
  • Graceful endings. A good system should have a path for migration, decommissioning, or returning to a simpler option.

Questions for the lab

I do not have a finished framework yet. These are questions I can carry into future projects:

  1. What existing hardware and knowledge can be reused?
  2. What maintenance does this add, and who can realistically perform it?
  3. What happens when the network, power, vendor, or maintainer disappears?
  4. Can another person understand the system without reverse-engineering it?
  5. Is self-hosting actually the responsible choice here, or would a managed service be safer and less wasteful?
  6. What evidence would make a claim about the system defensible?

For now, this is an orientation rather than a new section of the site or a badge to put on every project. I want the ideas to earn their place through actual builds, measurements, failures, and revisions. The portfolio can change as that work gives me better language for what I mean.
